When pondering what is to come
I envision myself standing in an open sunlit field of possibility.
Gone are the days of anticipating twists and turns,
what might be, who could be involved,
what will be said or will be done.
I do not miss the angst of those self imposed machinations.
I turn my face towards the warmth of the Sun
and study instead the fine set of tools
I have gathered upon my journey.
In gratitude, I reflect upon every step or misstep
delivering new adjustments to my orientation.
Impasses upon the road sometimes stop me stock still
until a breath, a moment, a week or a year
imposes a quietude that instructs me to look further,
more deeply or from another point of view.
It is of great comfort to realize Life, my tutor and guide, is always alongside me.
If I am willing to readjust, reconsider or realign my knowing
compassion and understanding expand.
I find delight in discovering another pathway.
John Cage once said he wasn’t so much interested in learning new things.
He wanted Life to change his mind.
That is knowledge deepened.
To remain facile, unburdened and ready to quickly pivot
requires being prepared for the unexpected.
To find oneself standing in that field of possibility
equipped with past experience and open heart
readies me for what is next.
I have but to slow my thoughts, realize
and simply do the next right thing
.
